Between Vietnam and Japan, it\u2019s only a four or five-hour flight.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

About twice the time it takes to get from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.
\nThese days, there are so many flights that people assume the direct route has been around for decades. But the truth is, the very first direct flight only took off in the year 2000.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, Kitaro and I were sitting in a small caf\u00e9 near Noi Bai Airport.
\nOutside the window, silver planes rolled down the runway one after another, like schools of fish heading for the open sea.<\/p>\n

\u201cKitaro,\u201d I asked, my hand wrapped around a warm cup of coffee, \u201cdo you know when the first direct flight between Vietnam and Japan was?\u201d<\/p>\n

He thought for a moment, then said quietly,
\n\u201cNovember 1st, 2000. Vietnam Airlines launched the route from Saigon to Tokyo, in partnership with Japan Airlines. Back then, there were only four flights a week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, time has moved quickly. Vietnam Airlines now runs about sixty flights a week. Vietjet is even bolder \u2013 one hundred and thirty-eight flights weekly, connecting Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Hiroshima, more than twenty flights a day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a lot,\u201d I said.
\n\u201cYeah. Kansai alone has four round trips a day,\u201d Kitaro replied with a faint smile.<\/p>\n

Outside, another Boeing lifted off, disappearing into the pale afternoon sky.
\nSomewhere inside, there were travelers with restless hearts, business documents in neat briefcases, and tiny fragments of dreams, swaying gently in the air.\u00a0The farther and harder the road,
\nthe deeper the memories carve themselves in.
\nI fear that one day, when the road becomes too easy,
