One humid afternoon in July, Nam wandered along the backstreets behind Ueno Park. Everyone knows the park for its pandas, but that day pandas weren\u2019t on his mind. He just kept walking, aimlessly, under a sky heavy with low clouds.
\nThen, past a row of old maples, he saw a flicker of pink swaying in the breeze. As he got closer, an expanse of lotus flowers opened before him. Broad green leaves covered the surface of the pond, each blossom standing quietly in the air. There was almost no scent, yet somehow it carried the smell of his home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Shinobazu Pond,\u201d Kitaro said. \u201cIn summer the lotuses bloom like this. Sometimes I see young Vietnamese women in ao dai posing for photos. Feels like the Mekong Delta has appeared in Tokyo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nam laughed. \u201cI\u2019ve lived in Japan for over ten years, but this is the first time I\u2019ve seen it like this.\u201d Then he told Kitaro about the water buffalo carts in Okinawa, slow and deliberate as they crossed the shallows to Yubu Island. The wooden wheels creaked. The salty wind moved through his mind like an old song.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have so many water buffalo in Vietnam,\u201d Kitaro said. \u201cWhy doesn\u2019t anyone run something like that there?\u201d
\n\u201cToo familiar, maybe,\u201d Nam shrugged. \u201cAnd if the buffalo left\u2026 souvenirs in the middle of the road, it might be a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation drifted to mangoes in Hokkaido\u2014red and ripe in the dead of winter, grown with the heat of hot springs and the insulation of snow. Each fruit sold for over two hundred thirty dollars. Nam joked he could buy the whole tree back home for that price.<\/p>\n

\n a glass of fresh sugarcane juice in a small Tokyo eatery, made not from imported cane but from Okinawa\u2019s fields\u2014turned into brown sugar, into awamori, or crushed fresh by visiting hands. Its amber sweetness softened the sharp edges of Tokyo\u2019s air.<\/p>\n

Lotus flowers, water buffalo, mangoes, sugarcane. Pieces of a distant country, found unexpectedly in the middle of another. And in that moment, it felt as though a small wind had passed quietly through his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext summer, let\u2019s go to Okinawa,\u201d Kitaro said.
