It was late in the year, and the sun draped a golden ribbon across Tan Son Nhat\u2019s runways. In the hum of the international terminal\u2014voices over the loudspeakers, the roll of suitcase wheels\u2014Nam suddenly stopped mid-step.<\/p>\n

Off to the right, in a corner washed with sunlight, stood a stone monument. On its face, the flags of Vietnam and Japan were carved side by side, with inscriptions in both languages. Nam studied it for a moment, then turned to Kitaro.
\n\u201cKitaro, do you know what this is?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kitaro smiled, the way someone does when they\u2019ve been asked exactly the right question.
\n\u201cOf course. That\u2019s a marker of Japan\u2019s support in upgrading Tan Son Nhat Airport. Using ODA funds and sending over engineers, they improved the runways, lighting systems, air traffic control, and even the international terminal. Thanks to that, Ho Chi Minh City became well-connected to Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.\u201d<\/p>\n
