\u201cNam,\u201d Kitaro said, lifting his gaze, eyes glinting, \u201cby the end of 2023, there were already over 3,200 Japanese companies\u00a0operating in Vietnam. On afternoons like this, I bet thousands of cups just like mine\u2026 are being sipped by Japanese hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nam laughed, though his eyebrows rose.
\n\u201cThat many? Back in the early 2000s, you could count Japanese companies here on your fingers. Honda, Toyota, maybe Nippon Paint. Now if you walk through industrial park like Thang Long\u00a0in Ha Noi\u00a0or Nomura\u00a0in Hai Phong, it\u2019s Japanese signs everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leaning closer, Kitaro\u2019s voice took on a conspiratorial tone.
\n\u201cJapan has 5,473 FDI projects\u00a0in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of nearly 78 billion USD\u2014third among all investing countries. And that\u2019s not counting the new ones lining up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve heard over 56% of Japanese companies\u00a0here plan to expand in the next year or two,\u201d Nam said.
\n\u201cExactly!\u201d Kitaro\u2019s voice sharpened with enthusiasm. \u201cJETRO found that Vietnam tops Southeast Asia in that figure\u2014higher than Thailand or Indonesia. People even call it \u2018Japan\u2019s second factory\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nam took a slow sip, smiling wryly.
\n\u201cJapanese folks really do work hard. They set up proper factories, run real production\u2014not the kind of \u2018ghost investment\u2019 that cashes out fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cBut the truth is, Vietnam\u2019s administrative procedures are\u2026 like phin coffee that hasn\u2019t been stirred\u2014tangled and slow to drip. Laws can change overnight, and adapting isn\u2019t easy.\u201d<\/p>\n
