Winter in Hanoi seeps into your bones, yet in a small pho shop, the rising steam seems to dissolve the chill. Nam and Kitaro sat there, the murmur of the street humming beyond the thin walls.<\/p>\n

Kitaro\u2019s eyes wandered upward to a faded black-and-white photograph: a Japanese soldier standing among Viet Minh fighters.
\n\u201cNam\u2026 I\u2019m a hundred percent sure he\u2019s Japanese. But why is he with the Viet Minh?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nam took a sip of the fragrant broth and nodded.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s true. After Japan surrendered in 1945, some soldiers didn\u2019t go home. They stayed, fighting alongside the Viet Minh against the French.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some stayed for ideals, some for compassion, and some for love. Men like Shichinohe Mamoru and Nakagawa Kikuo lived like farmers, trained soldiers, dug trenches, marched in the rain. Some died. Some, when invited to return to Japan, simply said, \u2018I am Vietnamese now.\u2019<\/p>\n

Kitaro sat in silence, his gaze somewhere far beyond the foggy forests of memory. Nam smiled faintly.
