The Beheiren Movement \u2013 When Japanese People Took to the Streets for Vietnam<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

At Highlands Coffee by Hanoi\u2019s Flag Tower, the air smelled of roasted beans and lotus tea. Outside the window lay a silent, weathered airplane\u2014no longer a weapon, just a relic of history.<\/p>\n

Nam leaned forward, his voice curious.
\n\u201cKitaro, have you heard of the Beheiren movement in Japan?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kitaro smiled knowingly.
\n\u201cOf course. It stood for \u2018Betonamu ni Heiwa o! Shimin Reng\u014d\u2019\u2014The Citizens\u2019 League for Peace in Vietnam. From 1965 to 1974, they opposed the war and held deep compassion for the Vietnamese people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nam listened as Kitaro spoke of June 15, 1969, when over 70,000 people filled the streets of Tokyo. Of protests at Yokota Air Base and in front of the U.S. Embassy, condemning the bombing of Ha\u00a0Noi and Hai\u00a0Phong.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey fought in ways very Japanese,\u201d Kitaro continued. \u201cBuying shares in companies that supported the war, then speaking out at shareholder meetings. Helping American soldiers desert and flee to Sweden. Every act was a refusal to let the war continue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nam\u2019s gaze returned to the silent airplane.
\n\u201cI\u2019m grateful to those Japanese friends,\u201d he murmured.<\/p>\n

Kitaro nodded.
\n\u201cSpeak with someone in Japan over sixty, and you might find they remember. Some stood in the streets, others gave quietly. But all of them carried one wish in their hearts\u2014peace for Vietnam.\u201d<\/p>\n

A breeze rustled the trees outside. The airplane would never fly again.
