\nHanoi was still cool, the kind of cool that carries a faint trace of winter.
\nIn Hoa Binh Park, a soft spring wind moved through the young cherry trees.<\/p>\n

Nam and Kitaro sat on a bench, hands wrapped around cups of coffee still steaming.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee those trees?\u201d Nam leaned in.
\n\u201cThey\u2019re the real thing\u2014brought straight from Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kitaro laughed.
\n\u201cI thought they were just local peaches with fancy labels. You\u2019re serious?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDead serious,\u201d Nam said.
\n\u201cLast year, the Japan\u2013Vietnam Friendship Association from Chukyo gave Hanoi 110 trees.
\nThey even sent over Japanese engineers to teach how to plant them the way it\u2019s done back home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kitaro nodded slowly.
\n\u201cRight\u2026 I remember reading about that. The planting ceremony.
\nThe Japanese embassy people were there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot just Hanoi,\u201d Nam went on.
\n\u201cThey sent 200 more to Tay Ninh, planted high up on Ba Den Mountain\u2014the tallest peak in the south.
\nCherry blossoms like the cold, but give them altitude and cool air, and they\u2019ll bloom just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo now,\u201d Kitaro said, looking toward the rows of trees,
\n\u201cfrom Hanoi to Hue, Da Nang to Tay Ninh\u2026
\nyou can see sakura anywhere.
\nEvery spring, they\u2019ll remind people of Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Lunar New Year falls in February,\u201d Nam smiled,
\n\u201cand the weather\u2019s right, sakura might bloom alongside Vietnam\u2019s peach blossoms.
\nTwo shades of pink for the same New Year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kitaro\u2019s eyes followed the branches.
\n\u201cMaybe one day, people here will take trips to see \u2018Hanoi cherry blossoms,\u2019
\njust like Japanese go to Kyoto for hanami.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd maybe then,\u201d Nam said,
\n\u201cour grandchildren will think sakura have always been from here,
\nnever knowing they were a gift from far away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spring wind moved on, gentle and unhurried.
